Zimbabwean president critically sick in Singapore hospital

Zimbabwe - The 88-year-old leader, who is believed to be suffering from prostate cancer, flew to Singapore by private jet on Saturday April 7 for treatment.

His wife, Grace, and close family members are reported to be at his bedside.

The president has undergone several bouts of  herapy in Asia in recent years. But his condition has now deteriorated and there are claims that he has agreed to hand over power to his defence minister.

Rumours over Mr. Mugabe’s health have been rife in recent weeks because of  his frail appearance.

There was heightened speculation on Sunday when the Zimbabwe government postponed a cabinet meeting at the last minute.

The Zimbabwe Mail, quoting a senior official of  Mr. Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party, said the leader who has ruled the country since its independence from Britain in 1980, was undergoing intensive treatment in Asia.

Zuma praises Senegal's Wade for stepping down

President Jacob Zuma(SABC)

President Jacob Zuma has praised Senegal president Abdoulaye Wade for stepping down. Senegal's president of 12 years conceded defeat after losing the presidential poll to his rival Macky Sall after the run-off vote earlier in the week. Wade, who took office in 2000, had faced fierce criticism for seeking a third term.

President Zuma says Wade's decision to relinquish power was proof that democracy is being entrenched in the African continent.

Zuma says: “In a democratic system what is always expected is that the loser must concede defeat and accept that as a reality, that the will of the people has been exercised.  We appreciate what has happened in Senegal. The fact that President Wade has said I've been defeated and there is no challenge of anything, this is what democracy should be.”

The African Union has also praised Senegal president Abdoulaye Wade for stepping down.

Sall won his West African country's presidential election with 65.80 % of the vote, which European observers said on Tuesday was credible and trouble-free. Incumbent Abdoulaye Wade won 34.20 % of the second-round vote.

JUBA/KHARTOUM
Sudan, S.Sudan to resume talks, don't want war

JUBA/KHARTOUM - Sudan and South Sudan are expected to resume talks on Saturday, with leaders of the former civil war foes playing down the risks of a war after the most violent border clashes since the country split in two.

The neighbours clashed for two days this week in the disputed oil-rich border region, in the worst direct fighting since South Sudan became independent in July under a 2005 peace deal with Khartoum that ended decades of civil war.

The United Nations and the United States have warned the clashes could reignite war between the mainly Muslim north and the South, where most follow Christian and traditional beliefs.

But despite the violence and many bellicose comments, leaders of the two countries say they are committed to peace."As a newborn country we want peace with our neighbour to be able to focus our energies on nation-building," said Pagan Amum, South Sudan's top negotiator.

"We've had enough of war," Amum said, echoing conciliatory comments by Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir who said Khartoum wanted to live peacefully with the South.Struggling with economic crisis, neither government can afford a full-scale war at a time when people in both countries are war weary, diplomats say.

But analysts do not see a breakthrough at the Addis Ababa talks after Bashir called off an April 3 summit with his southern counterpart Salva Kiir.

Angola
Education minister stresses visible gains of ten years of peace

Luanda - The gains of the peace during the ten years are clearly visible in the education sector, since there are more students in the system and a balanced implantation, said Friday in Luanda, the minister of Education, Mpinda Simao.

The government official who provided this information when speaking to the press on April 4, Peace Day, said that the gains in education are clearly visible, unlike those years in which the concentration of the school network was mostly on the coast side of the country.
Currently, this implantation is almost everywhere throughout the country, although there is not the same pace of growth in all provinces there is already occurring in favour of training in the 18 provinces.

"Today we have the secondary technical education institutions scattered throughout the country, which allows each province to train staff in a particular area and to ensure a certain retention of staff who contribute to local development," he said.
During this period, he added, there has been a considerable expansion of higher education, as we know this sub-system currently has about 150,000 students, as opposed to 15,000 ten years ago.
Four years ago, he said, the school system had about 50,000 students, now this number has tripled, and achieved a breakthrough in terms of increased educational coverage at the level of higher education.

02 March 2012 Ronald Webster Day Celebrated on Anguilla
Anguilla today celebrated the 86th Birthday of the "Father of the Nation" Mr. James Ronald Webster.

This event was celebrated as a national holiday called the Ronald Webster Day. In honor of Mr. Webster, there was an official parade at which Mr. Webster made some brief remarks. His short address  was very touching.
He noted that we have come a long way but have a long way still to go.
He noted that some outed the freedom torch, others have rekindled it, and still others are pressing forward with it.
He also noted that he has passed the fight on to a new generation that were not born during the days of the revolution.

02/25/2012 White House, State Department condemn Iran on pastor’s execution orders

“, an Iranian Christian charged with leaving Islam, has received a local trial courts final verdict, according to sources close to his legal team, and may now be executed for leaving Islam,” CNN reports.

By Dan Merica

2/25/2012 Iran (CNN) – Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, an Iranian Christian charged with leaving Islam, has received a local trial courts final verdict, according to sources close to his legal team, and may now be executed for leaving Islam.

Jodran Sekulow, executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice, said he was informed on Monday by the pastor's legal team that the final execution order had been issued. At this point, said Sekulow, the pastor could be executed without the legal team's knowledge.

The White House issued a pointed statement on Thursday, strongly condemning the reports and renewed calls for Iranian authorities to release the pastor.

"This action is yet another shocking breach of Iran's international obligations, its own constitution, and stated religious values," stated a release by the White House. "The United States stands in solidarity with Pastor Nadarkhani, his family, and all those who seek to practice their religion without fear of persecution-a fundamental and universal human right. "

Mark Toner, spokesperson at the U.S. Department of State, released a similar statement on Thursday.

"We stand with religious and political leaders from around the world in condemning Youcef Nadarkhani's conviction and call for his immediate release," read the statement.

Christian NBA Star Jeremy Lin Gets Censored In China

02/21/2012 China (The Financial Express) - China is facing a conundrum over the “Lin-sanity” phenomenon that is sweeping the world of basketball with the sensational rise of Jeremy Lin, the New York Knicks player.

Mr Lin, 23, has gone from obscurity to the world’s most-watched basketball star in under a week. His story - an unwanted player who shines when given a chance - has the right mix of adversity and success to captivate the US, but poses a problem for the media in basketball-mad China.

In mainland China, Mr Lin’s following on Weibo, the Twitter-like microblog, has exploded to over a million fans. But official Chinese media has been notably quiet. While this is partly due to the typical slow response of the hulking state-run media, there are signs that his Taiwanese background and devout Christianity sit uncomfortably with government censors.

On Wednesday morning in Beijing, China Central Television, the sports channel of CCTV, the national broadcaster, ran a taped Champions League football match as scheduled instead of switching to a live broadcast of Mr Lin steering the Knicks to victory with a last-gasp “three-point” basket.

Chinese basketball fans have been asking why CCTV has not shown his games. Online forums are awash with speculation that the Taiwanese flags waved by some of his fans are the impediment. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and rejects any displays of Taiwanese independence.

...

Mr Lin’s Christianity is perhaps more awkward for China’s atheist communist rulers. While Beijing officially sanctions some churches, it frowns on the spontaneous professions of love for God that pepper Mr Lin’s postgame comments.

Evidence of how state censors would like to downplay his religion came in a CCTV news report when he was named a National Basketball Association player of the week on Monday.

“I love the fact that he gave praise to his team and to God,” said one New Yorker interviewed in English.

But the Chinese subtitles translated his comments simply as “I love him for praising his team”, scrubbing out the religious reference.

Guinea (angolapress)
Guinea to hold elections in May: minister

Conakry. Guinea

Conakry - Guinea will hold elections in May, more than five months after the originally slated date, with or without the consent of the opposition, the west African country's interior minister told AFP Monday.

Guinea was meant to go to the polls in late December, but the ballot was postponed to meet opposition demands for a role in planning the vote.

"These elections have been postponed, but today, everything is ready," said Alhassane Conde, adding that the revision of the electoral lists would be completed in time for a May vote.

The opposition had complained it was not consulted when the December date was set and accused the regime of planning to hold sham polls with no safeguards against fraud.

It is also seeking a reform of the electoral commission.

But Conde ruled out any reforms ahead of the ballot.

Libreville
Zambia win African Cup of Nations

Libreville – Zambia has the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title for the first time after beating tournament favourites Ivory Coast by 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out after the game in Libreville ended goalless.

After 14 penalties, Stoppila Sunzu scored the winning goal for Zambia after goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene saved Kolo Toure’s spot-kick and Gervinho blasted over.

Rainford Kalaba missed for the Zambians.

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba missed a penalty for his side in the 70th minute when he side-footed the ball over the cross-bar.

Zambia dominated the game and should have scored in regulation time but failed to make the most of their chances, with Ivorian goalkeeper Boubacar Barry pulling off a number of excellent saves.

In the penalty shoot-out it was Zambian goalkeeper Mweene who was the hero for his side as he not only saved one penalty, he also scored the fifth for his side.

The Ivorians are the first team not to win the competition even though they did not concede a single goal.

Zambia’s first African title has come in the same city where 18 Zambian internationals died in a plane crash in 1993 in the country’s worst sporting disaster.
